A Quick Packing List for What to Wear in New Orleans in August

New Orleans in August is one of the most exciting times to visit the city. The calendar is stacked, the streets are alive, and the energy is unlike any other month. If you're heading to town for a convention, a long weekend, or a well-earned summer vacation, knowing what to wear in New Orleans in August means dressing smart and often it can also mean dressing up!

Whether you're staying close to the French Quarter, exploring the Arts Warehouse District, or making the most of a packed event schedule, the right wardrobe keeps you looking sharp and feeling comfortable from morning until night.

What to Wear in New Orleans in August: The Core Essentials for Daytime Adventures

August in New Orleans is hot and sunny, and with so much to do outside, the goal is to dress in a way that keeps you cool and ready to move. Light, breathable fabrics are the foundation of any smart packing list. Linen, cotton, and moisture-wicking blends are your best travel buddies here.

  • Lightweight tops: Pack more than you think you need. A fresh shirt between a museum visit and a festival is not a luxury in August, it's part of the fun. Loose-fitting polos, linen button-downs, breezy tanks, and flowy blouses all work well. Opt for lighter colors that reflect heat rather than absorb it. And if you are arriving on or around August 1st, do not forget your whites. White Linen Night on Julia Street is one of the most beloved annual traditions in the city, and you are steps away from the action!
  • Comfortable bottoms: Linen pants, cotton shorts, and lightweight sundresses cover most occasions. If you are heading to a business dinner or an event at the hotel, a pair of tailored trousers in a light fabric will take you from a meeting room to cocktail hour without missing a beat.
  • A layer for indoors: New Orleans restaurants, hotels, and event spaces are never afraid to run their air conditioning. A light cardigan or a long-sleeve layer that folds into your bag will feel like a lifesaver once you step inside.
  • Supportive footwear: Well-made sandals with cushioning, comfortable walking shoes, and waterproof footwear options should all make the list. New Orleans is an incredibly walkable city, and August gives you every reason to take full advantage of that. Avoid brand-new shoes you have not broken in, and skip anything with a heel that is not flat or block-style if you plan to walk the Quarter.
  • Accessories: Knowing what to wear in New Orleans in August also means thinking about the small things that make a big difference for everyday comfort. A wide-brim hat or a breathable baseball cap provides shade during outdoor exploring, though sunglasses in addition are non-negotiable. A small crossbody bag or belt bag keeps your hands free while you walk. And sunscreen (ideally in a stick or powder form so it doesn't weigh down your bag) should be a daily habit for the duration of your time in the Big Easy.

Don’t Leave Your Rain Gear at Home

Keep in mind that August can get rainy in the afternoons with showers that appear quickly and disappear just as fast. A compact umbrella or a packable rain poncho takes up almost no space and solves a problem that catches most first-time visitors off guard. A waterproof tote or a bag with a zip closure keeps your essentials dry. Being prepared for a bit of rain means you won’t have to interrupt any of your fun if the weather takes an unexpected turn.

Packing With a Plan: What to Wear to Every August Event in New Orleans

August in New Orleans is characterized by some of the city's most beloved annual traditions, alongside a few special events specific to the summer of 2026. Here is what is on the calendar and our guide on how to pack like a local.

White Linen Night

Held on the first Saturday of August on Julia Street, just steps from the hotel, this beloved Arts District tradition turns the street into an outdoor celebration of local art, food, and culture. The dress code is right in the name. Wear your best white linen outfit, whether that is a flowing sundress, a crisp button-down, or a tailored linen set. This one rewards those who commit to the theme.

Dirty Linen Night

The French Quarter's more irreverent answer to White Linen Night, held the following weekend, Dirty Linen Night brings out the neighborhood's eccentric and festive side. The vibe is more casual and playful, so have fun with it. White is still welcome but so is anything festive, colorful, or a little eccentric.

Satchmo Fest

This free annual festival honors the music and legacy of New Orleans native Louis Armstrong with live jazz performances, local food, and plenty of soul. Dress for comfort and movement. Light layers, breathable tops, supportive sandals, and a poncho or compact umbrella in your bag for the afternoon showers means you won’t have to put a pause on the fun.

Red Dress Run

A wildly fun annual pub run through the streets of the city where participants raise money for local charities while dressed in red. The name tells you everything you need to know: wear a red dress, or any other festive red clothing. Comfortable shoes are strongly recommended since this event lasts for hours and moves through the streets of the city.

Saints Preseason

August marks the return of Saints football, and game day energy in New Orleans is an experience all its own. For kickoff on August 15th, toss on your jersey or your best black and gold and pair the outfit with shorts and your most comfortable sneakers.

Coolinary New Orleans

A citywide restaurant promotion running throughout August, Coolinary features special prix-fixe menus at some of the best dining establishments in the city, making it the ideal time to explore a new table (and a new outfit!). This is your excuse to pull out one of those elevated evening outfits you’ve been saving, such as a sundress or a linen blazer over a simple tee.

Museum Month

Throughout August, many of the city's top museums offer special programming and promotions, making it a great time to explore the galleries and cultural institutions of the Arts Warehouse District, many of which are a short walk from the hotel. Casual and comfortable works perfectly here. A breathable top, light bottoms, and a crossbody bag to keep your hands free to engage with the installations.

August 2026 Events in New Orleans

This year, New Orleans is set to host some additional excitement on top of our annual offerings. Anime Conclave brings together cosplay, gaming, panels, and pop culture for one of the more unexpected and entertaining conventions to hit New Orleans in 2026. If you are attending in costume, plan ahead for the heat. Lightweight fabrics and breathable underlayers make a big difference when you are in full cosplay and spending long hours on the convention floor. Battery powered fans are also a great addition for folks planning on dressing up.

The New Orleans SERA Invitational Rodeo and a Benson Boone concert also promise a lot of excitement for the city in August. For the rodeo, lean into the western theme with boots and buckles ( for lighter fabrics and lower heels than you might wear in a cooler climate). The Benson Boone show calls for something a little more festive. Smart casual to elevated evening wear fits the atmosphere well.
